Family-Style Decorating

When it came time to decorate Heather Perlman's four-bedroom home in Bridgehampton, NY, the first call the graphic designer and mother of two made was to her mom, Los Angeles–based designer Jackie Terrell. "She's helped me decorate four places before, and our taste is very much in sync," says Heather.

The Beautiful End Result

With Jackie on the West Coast and her daughter on the East, decisions were made mostly via email, along with a few cross-country visits. Heather's husband, Hank, a commercial director, was on board and now their home has a breezy, colorful look. "I had my doubts about a few of the decisions in the kitchen," admits Heather, "but I'm happy Mom got her way!"

Living Room

The home already had a family room, so Jackie's challenge was to give this space off the kitchen its own identity. She added floor-to-ceiling bookcases to create a library-ish feel and a low coffee table and stools for the kids to play games. The velvet couch is from IKEA; Jackie chose it because it's her daughter's favorite color. "If it were up to Heather, everything in the house would be green," she says.

Dining Area

The Perlmans love to entertain, so they carved out a dining area in the family room by pairing a wood table with eight blue wood chairs from Design Within Reach. A 32-inch IKEA PS Maskros pendant makes a big statement for a small price ($90). The walls are a custom Benjamin Moore color of 50% Super White and 50% Cloud White—a mix that Jackie has perfected over the years.

Kitchen

Heather was nervous about her mom's idea to do white Caesarstone countertops along the perimeter and maple-color Caesarstone for the island top. "I said, 'That's so weird! Don't we like all white?'" says Heather. "But I love it now." She also had doubts about the green linoleum floor: "I kept picturing those '50s-style squares, but it's seamless and great-looking," says Heather.

Family Room

For this busy room, Jackie picked an IKEA Kivik sectional (extra slipcovers mean no stress about spills) and an easy-to-clean plastic coffee table. Heather was looking for art to hang above the couch, but her mom suggested two quatrefoil-shaped mirrors from Restoration Hardware.Kid

Kids' Room

This tiny room under the eaves was initially set up as an office, but Heather and Jackie decided to configure it as a cozy nook for George, 7, and Sally, 6. "Aside from a few toys, the only things in there are West Elm platform beds placed end-to-end, books, and blackout shades," says Heather. "It's like camping." The cotton bedspreads are by Roberta Freymann, and the IKEA rug is a soft, felt-like fabric.

Master Bedroom

Instead of avoiding the dramatic slant of the ceiling by crowding the furniture into the corners, Jackie placed Heather and Hank's headboard-less bed directly under it. Long IKEA cabinets double as nightstands. "The extra storage is a bonus since the closets are miniscule," says Heather. The hand-loomed cotton rug is from Madeline Weinrib.

Bathroom

As the sole bathroom on the second floor, this quirky dormered space had to be multifunctional. A freestanding tub was placed under the roof's peak; when it's shower time, four identical curtains from Urban Outfitters are drawn around it. Above the schoolhouse sink is a Pottery Barn mirror that tilts down so the kids can see in it. Everyone has a designated hook and a hanging basket for toiletries.
